Grounds & Gardening Group 2011–2012
We are a committed committee within Mitchell PTA that develops, oversees, and maintains improvement projects to the Mitchell Elementary School grounds and outdoor educational environment. Plus, we don’t mind getting our hands a little dirty!
Purpose of the Grounds and Gardening Group
Presented in order of impact that will be made upon the students’ education. The fourth purpose being the most important and long lasting.
- Help the school maintain current landscaping during a time where Jefferson County staffing and funding is limited.
- Improve upon the outdoor schooling environment so that it is functional, safe, handicap accessible and aesthetically appealing. This would include new plantings, installation of public space equipment and recreational equipment. These projects must comply with county guidelines and be easy to maintain.
- Engage teachers and students in projects that involve aesthetics as well as increase a sense of school pride and spirit. This might include horticulture projects, art and sculpture, grounds appreciation (trash pick up days), and educating students on what projects are happening.
- Inspire school projects that consider ways a student can interact with the community and positively impact their environment.
If you have an idea that meets the above purposes, let us know. Be aware that Jefferson county has specific requirements and regulations regarding any changes and improvements to the school property. Approval by the principal and the county is needed for each project. Ongoing maintenance should be minimal. If you suggest a project, plan on helping with the organization or inspiring teacher and students to become involved. Creative funding is needed. Outright donations from individuals, businesses, local community groups will be key!
Join the PTA, pick a project that motivates you or dream up your own project.
Establish a list of projects for 2010–2011, estimate a budget, consider funding options, and present project list to the school and the PTA for approval.
