Living at Altitude

Welcome to mountain living. Living above sea level may be new for your family so here are a few general tips; and please see the link below for more information.

Tips for High Altitude Living in the Denver Area
  • Don’t overdo exercise the first day or two. Let your body adjust.
  • Use sunscreen with an SPF rating of least 15.
  • Drink more liquids than you would at sea level. Denver is very dry and it’s easy to become dehydrated
  • Drink less alcohol and consume less rich foods
Symptoms of altitude sickness-Seek medical attention if you have these symptoms
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Headache
  • Nausea, Diarrhea, Upset Stomach
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • Difficulty breathing, coughing, confusion

Cooking at Elevation

The elevation also has strange effects on cooking. Water boils at a lower temperature, food won’t cook faster, the cook must learn to allow a longer time for anything that requires cooking in boiling water, pasta, potatoes, rice, beans, etc. Slow cooking or braising will require an extra hour of cooking for every 1,000 feet above 4,000 feet above sea level. Baking can be a disaster when attention is not paid to the instructions. Box cake mixes come with high altitude cooking instructions included.
